Despite the setbacks of the June 1990 elections, which questioned the government's legitimacy, the government resumed its course towards democracy. Since June 1991, when the military was called into action by the government, democracy in Algeria is diminishing. The military now has assumed control of the state apparatus and its antagonism towards the FIS (Islamic Salvation Front) - "the greatest contender for parliament authority and a party (to) be judged by the same standards as any other party to the extent that it adheres to established principles and institutions" - may cost Algeria its chances for democracy.
