Zusammenfassung: | Analyses of the fundamentalist-modernist controversies and of church-sect typologies suggest that the theological position of religious institutions may be viewed sociologically as an independent variable which is common to both theoretical orientations. A study of sixty-six Protestant churches in a midwestern American city reveals interesting relationships between self-classified theological position and several institutional characteristics. These data point to the conclusion that theological position is a useful indicator of many important institutional characteristics and may be a key variable for locating religious bodies on the multidimensional church-sect continuum. |
